Services

Bright Futures offers free after-school and full day summer programming to youth in kindergarten through 5th grade who live or attend school in North Minneapolis.


Summer Program Services

Summer scholars experience a fast-paced, full day learning environment mixed with academic and enrichment activities, including:

  • An academic focus on preventing summer slide. (Summer slide is a term that describes loss of achievement gains made in the previous school year.)
  • A variety of active hands-on, creative activities like dance, yoga, art, and tennis.
  • A field trip every Friday.
  • Breakfast and lunch daily.

Here’s an example of our daily summer schedule:

9:15 Good Morning Check-in
9:30 Academic enrichment activities in math and reading
10:00 Second Step: Scholars build social-emotional skills like nurturing positive relationships, managing emotions, and setting goals.
10:30 Instructional reading games
11:00 Skills for Life: Scholars learn how to save and manage money, how to start a business, and how to engage in and support their communities.
11:30 Physically fun activities
12:00 Lunch
1:00 Club Time: Art enrichment, STEM, Nature, Gardening/Plant Science, and Lego Robotics
3:00 Program closes for the day.
Note: Morning time learning also includes lessons in the life cycle of butterflies, healthy living, mindfulness, and meditation.
Special:

 

“Fun Field Trip Fridays” include adventures at the Minnesota Zoo, the Science Museum, Como Park Pool, Maple Grove Central Park, The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Skateville, a Monday trip to the farm, and a Friday movie at the Capri.

 


School Year Program Services

  • Academic enrichment activities including independent reading, literacy and math, led by our experienced youth workers who use a variety of group teaching methods ranging from youth worker-created lessons, to electronic learning through iPads, computers, and SMARTboards.
  • Cool club activities. Students choose from a variety of clubs throughout the year that introduce them to STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), arts and crafts, dance, theater, music, and much more.
  • Daily “Super Snack” meals.
  • Supervised homework and quiet reading time.

Here’s the school-year daily schedule:

  • 2:30-3:00—Arrival and Snack Time
  • 3:00-3:30—Block #1: Homework and Quiet Reading Time
  • 3:30-4:00—Block #2: Academic Enrichment
  • 4:00-4:45—Block #3: Clubs
  • 4:45-5:00—Departure Time

Check out this wonderful online library of fun activities for scholars to do…anytime! They can learn how to make an apple volcano, a flashlight-in-a-bag, a no-sew sock bunny, and more. Each activity contains a list of all the supplies needed and step-by-step instructions to take a project from start to finish. (Please note that the order form for supplies is no longer valid.)

Yes, transportation is provided to and from Bright Futures for scholars who live in the north Minneapolis area. Parents/guardians can also drop off and pick up scholars.
